Lonely Sysadmin

Posted by Carson       Trackback

So my boss/cohort got laid off yesterday. Pretty swift exit, too. No email, just a quick “See Ya!” to everyone. We’ll be keeping in touch of course, to further our plans of complete world domination.

I’d like to believe that if he had sent a farewell email, it would read:
“Farewell to thee, I’ll pass thru your world with ease, like wind blowing thru the leaves.”, followed by some kool ascii art of a robot destroying something.

Pondering the Google Phenomenon

Posted by Carson       Trackback

Almost every workday for the past 3 years, I drive by the Google campus on my way home. Almost inevitably, every time as I am rolling by, I begin to wonder, “What in the world do they need all that space for?”. The obvious answer is people, but for what purpose…Finance? Marketing? An army of Brilliant Sysadmins?

Not a whole lot has changed with Google over the years, and that is precisely what makes it such a perfect search engine – simple and precise. Nonetheless, it begs the question, “What it the next big thing for Google?”. The are obviously ramping up for something. Granted, there are new google services like newsgroup archives, news, and shopping services, but a lot of those services have been available for quite some time. I have seen the campus grow from a single building, then two, then three, and now, it looks as though the entire former Silicon Graphics campus will be filled, along with the buildings across the street! Hit craigslist.org and you will constantly find new openings for all sorts of jobs withing Google, many of them technical.

With Google now public, there are undoubtedly a bunch of fresh millionares prancing around the valley, and I am sure that Google will continue it’s phenomenal growth. My curiousity grows with every pass-by of the Google campus. Maybe someday I will stop in and ask what the deal is….but probably not.

Oh yeah, if you were wondering whatever became of Silicon Graphics…they moved down the block a bit…cheaper rent I guess.

Finally got rid of my cheezy MX500 and got my hands on a MIB Logitech Dual Optical mouse.

Feast your eyes on this:

Felt pretty good to crack that sealed box open and wrap my digits around that marvelous pointer.

Flux Capacitor

Posted by Carson       Trackback

SO….yeah, I got my hands on a Flux Capacitor and jumped 4 months into the future, hence the lack of posts. It feels like March was just yesterday. Some stuff is the same. Thrawn still loves the smell of fresh rails at 5PM, and Beavis still cries like a little skoolgirl when he doesn’t get his way in Quake. Other stuff is remarkably different though, like the burning desire I have every moment of the day to stand up, walk out of my office and never return to work. Until then, I shall continue to crack, rant, bitch, whine, nap, and munch until something better comes along.
