Nerdy things I should want….but don’t

Maybe it’s that I’m just too picky, maybe it’s that I’m cheap, maybe I’m too cynical….who knows? Having said that, here are some things that (being a techno-nerd) I should really want, but have absolutely no interest in:

1) VoIP at home – I guess it’s just too much of a pain and too expensive. What good is unlimited Long Distance when I already get it on my cell phone? Plus there’s another piece of equipment that you have to use to bridge your regular phone over to the network. Also the fact that when the broadband tanks, which it does about once a month, BLAMMO!, no phone service. How cool is that?

2) Satellite Radio (XM or Sirius) – I think the cheapo factor comes into play here: Why should I pay $10-$13 a month for something that I get for free now. Also, what good is CD-quality music if it pipes into your stereo over an FM modulator? That CD-quality sound is now FM-Quality…KOOL! Last, have you seen those satellite revievers? Talk about ugly, plus the fact you have that thing strapped to your dash with cords going everywhere….NO THANKS!

3) Macs – Sure they are pretty, but what good are they to me when I deal with PC’s 99.5% of the time? Sure, you can run virtual PC, but it’s slow and you have to have a window with windows XP running. Once someone invents a small x86 emulator that just runs hidden and lets you run a single windows app as thought it were native on MacOS, I might be interested in a PowerBook, but otherwise, FOOEY!

4) Hybrids – Those hybrid cars are all the rage with techno nerds. They supposedly get good gas mileage, help the environment, have nifty stuff like bluetooth and LCD screens with built-in GPS, but they are kinda ugly. I don’t get why we don’t have cars like in back to the future. Give me a DeLorean that runs for a couple of years on some weapons-grade plutonium or a “Mr. Fusion” generator and then you’ll see my eyebrows rise with interest.

I know there are other things too, I just can’t remember them all right now. I’ll be sure to post any other seemingly worthless (to me) nerd stuff when I remember.
