Pondering the Google Phenomenon
Almost every workday for the past 3 years, I drive by the Google campus on my way home. Almost inevitably, every time as I am rolling by, I begin to wonder, “What in the world do they need all that space for?”. The obvious answer is people, but for what purpose…Finance? Marketing? An army of Brilliant Sysadmins?
Not a whole lot has changed with Google over the years, and that is precisely what makes it such a perfect search engine – simple and precise. Nonetheless, it begs the question, “What it the next big thing for Google?”. The are obviously ramping up for something. Granted, there are new google services like newsgroup archives, news, and shopping services, but a lot of those services have been available for quite some time. I have seen the campus grow from a single building, then two, then three, and now, it looks as though the entire former Silicon Graphics campus will be filled, along with the buildings across the street! Hit craigslist.org and you will constantly find new openings for all sorts of jobs withing Google, many of them technical.
With Google now public, there are undoubtedly a bunch of fresh millionares prancing around the valley, and I am sure that Google will continue it’s phenomenal growth. My curiousity grows with every pass-by of the Google campus. Maybe someday I will stop in and ask what the deal is….but probably not.
Oh yeah, if you were wondering whatever became of Silicon Graphics…they moved down the block a bit…cheaper rent I guess.
