Brand Spankin’ New

Posted by Carson       Trackback

I’ve completely gutted knoblog.com and replaced the b2 blog engine with the latest WordPress engine. WordPress has a lot of really neat features that my old version of b2 did not support.

Found some pics I took while renovating a computer lab at an old job. Some of them were pretty cool, but I like this one the best.

Broadband Drama

Posted by Carson       Trackback

Rumor has it that Comcast is upping the cap for it’s cable modem users. I will now be getting 6mpbs down and 768kbps up for around $50 a month. All I can say is that it’s about time. I remember in 1999, when I first got setup with Excite@HOME cable modem service. Forty bucks a month got me 1.5mbps down and 128kbps up…….except that Excite didn’t actually cap the service. So what I actually got was about 4mbps down and 2mbps up; this was truly awesome. I remember sitting there six years ago, I felt like the future was now. I would ponder how fast the connections would be in 5 years. I thought, “Surely we will all be surfing at 100mbps in 5 years”. Boy was I wrong. Unfortunately, like many an excellent company with a jaded business plan, Excite got ruined in the tech bubble and was no more by 2001 or so.

Isn’t technology great? Here we are in silicon valley, six years have passed, and broadband still is slower (on the uplink) than it was in 1999. Fantastic. So much for my 100Mbps dreams….

Treo 650 = Mobile Goodness

Posted by Carson       Trackback

I’ve been using a Treo 650 for a few months now, and I must say, that it is a fantastic tool for IT nerds like myself. The high price is a bit of a turn off, but since I have had my Treo, I haven’t even looked at my Dell PDA. I have effectively been able to combine my mobile phone and pda into one device, and I haven’t looked back.

Some users complain of the memory shortage, but being my first Treo, I hardly notice. One time, versamail was hogging a lot of memory, but since I cleared that up, my Treo has been running like a champ!

My favorite thing: pSSH – I can ssh into any of my linux boxes and do my bidding…this is sysadmin heaven. Now if someone would just hurry up and build a windows RDP client…

Apple: King of Suck

Posted by Carson       Trackback

So a bunch of new mac products were announced today:

iPod shuffle – great if you want your device to control you, a la skynet.
http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/

iWork – nice try, but I predict Office:mac will reign supreme
http://www.apple.com/iwork/

Mac mini – looks cool, but where are the parallel and serial ports? Fooey!
http://www.apple.com/macmini/

iPhoto5 – hey! it imports movies from your camera now, too…just like windows has since FOREVER.

P.S. – I secretly lust for the Mac mini.

Return of the Knob

Did you miss me?

[crickets chirping]

I figured as much.

The holidays were busier than ever, mainly in part to Sydney. Nine months old and that kid still has no concept of email MTA’s, internet routing protocols, or how to compile a simple Apache/PHP/MySQL environment. I’m starting to fear that she will be more into [shudder] sports [/shudder] than computers.

Anyway, I’m back on track and I have resolved to do exactly nothing different than last year. I think this will be a realistic goal that should be easily achievable.

So, Happy New Year, come back in a couple of months…maybe I will have some new posts by then!
